Head or Heart: What Does It Really Mean to Believe God?
Believing God sounds simple. But the deeper you look at what the Bible says about faith, the more you realize how much potential is locked inside of it. Most of us know the right scriptures. We can quote them, find them, maybe even put them on a plaque. But knowing something in your head and believing it in your heart are two very different things.
What Is the Work of God, According to Jesus?
In John 6:29, Jesus gives a surprisingly simple answer to a big question:
"Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.'" - John 6:29 New King James Version (NKJV)
Your assignment as a follower of Jesus Christ can be summed up in one word: believe. That is the work. That is the calling. And yet, for most of us, it is also the greatest challenge.
Where Does Faith Come From?
When you gave your life to Jesus Christ, something happened inside of you. Romans 10:9-10 describes it this way:
"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." - Romans 10:9-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
Notice where belief happens. Not in the mind. In the heart.
At the moment of salvation, God also gave you a measure of faith. And that measure has the ability to grow. Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. But this is not simply about listening to scripture around the clock. It is about what happens when the Word of God actually speaks to you, when Jesus breathes on it and something shifts inside of you.
What Did Jesus Say About the Power of Believing?
Jesus made some statements about faith that should stop us in our tracks. He said, "All things are possible to him who believes." He said it more than once. He meant it every time.
In Mark 9, a desperate Father came to Jesus with a son who was tormented and thrown into fire and water. The disciples could not help him. The man came to Jesus and said, "If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." Jesus responded:
"Jesus said to him, 'If you can believe, all things are possible to Him who believes.'" - Mark 9:23 New King James Version (NKJV)
In Matthew 8, a Roman centurion shocked Jesus with His faith. He told Jesus He did not need to come to his house or even lay hands on His servant. He said, just speak the word and it will be done. Jesus marveled at that kind of faith and held it up as an example.
And then there was Thomas, who refused to believe in the resurrection unless he could physically touch the wounds of Jesus. Jesus met Him right where He was and said:
"Do not be unbelieving, but believing." - John 20:27 New King James Version (NKJV)
Then He added: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." - John 20:29 New King James Version (NKJV)
That is you and me. We are called to believe without always seeing first.
Why Does the Heart Matter More Than the Head?
The heart is where we commune with God. It is where we actually experience Him. Head knowledge about God is not the same as knowing Him. The Pharisees had the law memorized. They knew every detail. But they never truly knew Him.
Faith does not arise from information. It arises from intimacy. It is when God breathes on a truth inside of you, when He reveals Himself to you in the middle of what you are wrestling with, that faith becomes real and immovable.
Proverbs 4:23 says:
"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." - Proverbs 4:23 New King James Version (NKJV)
Your heart is your place of belief. If the enemy can knock you off of what you believe in your heart, you lose your footing. But when truth is rooted deep in your heart, nothing can move you off of it.
Can Your Mind Lead You to Wrong Conclusions About God?
Yes. And this is where things get serious.
Romans 8:6-7 says:
"For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be." - Romans 8:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
The carnal mind is at war with the things of God. It gathers information, adds in the voices of others, layers in personal experience, and produces a conclusion that can be completely unbiblical. We do this more than we realize.
Consider how many times we take the Word of God and run it through what we already know, what we have already experienced, and arrive at a conclusion that is far removed from what God actually said. We put God in a box based on what our minds can process. But God's ways are higher than our ways. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Proverbs 3:5 says:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5 New King James Version (NKJV)
Smart thinking does not cut it when it comes to the Kingdom of God. The mind is part of the old man that was crucified with Christ. It likes to stay in control. We have to be on guard against it.
How Do You Move Truth From Your Head to Your Heart?
Romans 12:2 tells us:
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:2 New King James Version (NKJV)
Transformation happens through renewal. And renewal happens when we stop just collecting information about God and start allowing Him to breathe on His Word inside of us.
Paul prayed something powerful in Ephesians 3:19:
"To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." - Ephesians 3:19 New King James Version (NKJV)
That word "know" in the original language speaks of deep intimacy, not surface-level information. Paul was praying that believers would experience the love of God in a way that goes beyond what the mind can comprehend. And when that happens, you are filled with the fullness of God.
There are thousands of promises in the Word of God. How many of them are truly rooted in your heart? How many have you allowed the Holy Spirit to breathe on until they became a living reality in your life?
What Happens When We Believe With Our Whole Heart?
When truth moves from your head into your heart, doubt and unbelief get destroyed. Faith flourishes. Like a rudder on a boat, what you believe in your heart directs the course of your life.
Psalm 119:11 says:
"Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You." - Psalm 119:11 New King James Version (NKJV)
Hiding the Word in your heart is not memorization. It is allowing it to become fixed and settled in the deepest part of who you are. When that happens, you become immovable. You can be challenged, knocked around, and pressed on every side, but you will not be moved off of what God has spoken.
John 20:30-31 reminds us why the Bible was written in the first place:
"And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." - John 20:30-31 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Word was written so that you might believe. Everything in it is an invitation to trust Him more deeply.
Get Ready: Revival Is Coming
God is doing new things on the earth. Things that cannot be categorized by what we have already seen or experienced. He is calling His church to believe Him for the unprecedented. He is not asking us to understand it all first. He is asking us to believe.
The places in your heart where your mind has drawn inaccurate conclusions need to be surrendered to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to breathe on those areas. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you in the middle of your doubt. Ask Him to move truth from your head into your heart.
All things are possible to him who believes. That is not a suggestion. That is a promise from the mouth of Jesus Himself.
Life Application
This week, identify one truth from the Word of God that you know in your head but have not yet settled in your heart. Maybe it is a promise about provision, healing, identity, or God's faithfulness. Choose one. Then spend time this week asking the Holy Spirit to breathe on it. Pray over it. Sit with it. Let God reveal Himself to you through it. Do not just read it. Ask Him to make it real inside of you.
Ask yourself these questions as you go through the week:
Is there an area of my life where my mind has drawn a conclusion that does not line up with what God's Word actually says?
Am I believing God from my heart, or am I simply managing information about Him in my head?
What is one promise in Scripture that I have quoted but never truly received as a living reality in my life?
Am I willing to let the Holy Spirit challenge what I think I already know about how God works?
Faith is not just a feeling and it is not just a fact. It is a living, growing, heart-level trust in a God whose ways are higher than ours. He is calling you to believe Him, not just about Him. Take that step this week.
Summary
This sermon explores the difference between head knowledge and heart belief, challenging the congregation to move beyond intellectual understanding of God's Word into a deep, heart-level faith. The pastor draws on key scriptures to show that true believing is not about accumulating information but about allowing God to breathe on His truth until it becomes a living, settled reality in our hearts. Just as the Pharisees knew the law perfectly yet never truly knew God, we can quote scripture and recite promises without ever experiencing their power in our lives. The pastor uses a humorous personal story about a torn window screen to illustrate how our minds can draw completely wrong conclusions, warning that the carnal mind is actually at war with the things of God. The call to action is clear: stop letting the mind override the heart, guard what you believe, and invite the Holy Spirit to move truth from your head into your heart. With revival on the horizon, the church is urged to get ready by rooting God's promises deep within, because all things are possible to those who believe.
Intro Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You today with open hearts and willing spirits. We ask that You would quiet the noise of our own thoughts and opinions, and that You would speak directly to each heart in this room. Holy Spirit, we invite You to move freely among us as we gather to discuss Your Word. Help us to be honest about the places where we have relied on our own understanding rather than trusting You. Give us ears to hear what You are saying and the courage to let Your truth move from our heads into our hearts. We do not want to simply gain more information today. We want a genuine encounter with You. Have Your way in our group, Lord, and let this time draw us closer to You and to one another. In Jesus name, amen.

Questions
The pastor said that believing is described in John 6:29 as 'the work of God.' How does that change the way you think about faith as something you do versus something God enables in you?
Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV) says that 'with the heart one believes unto righteousness.' Why do you think God designed belief to be a matter of the heart rather than the mind? What is the difference in your own experience?
The pastor shared a funny story about a window screen to illustrate how our minds can reach completely wrong conclusions. Can you think of a time when your own reasoning led you to a conclusion about God or His Word that turned out to be inaccurate?
Romans 8:6-7 (NKJV) says the mind set on the flesh is 'enmity against God.' How have you personally experienced your own thinking working against what God was trying to do in your life?
The pastor said that God's promises need to move from your head into your heart before they become 'fixed and settled forever.' What is the difference between knowing a scripture in your head and having it truly rooted in your heart? Can you share an example of a promise that has made that journey for you?
Jesus said in Mark 9:23 (NKJV), 'If you can believe, all things are possible to Him who believes.' What is one area of your life right now where you find it hardest to actually believe that promise? What do you think is holding you back?
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) says, 'Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.' What are some practical ways you guard your heart against unbelief, doubt, or conclusions that are contrary to God's Word?
The pastor closed by saying revival is coming and the church needs to get ready by moving truth from the mind into the heart. What is one specific promise or truth from God's Word that you sense the Holy Spirit wants to make real in your heart this season? How will you pursue that this week?
Life Application
This week, identify one promise from God's Word that you can quote with your head but have not yet fully received in your heart. Write it down on a card or in your phone. Each morning, ask the Holy Spirit to breathe on that truth and make it real to you. Speak it out loud, not just as information but as a declaration of what you are choosing to believe. Pay attention to moments when your mind tries to argue against it, and when that happens, bring it back to the Word. By the end of the week, journal one way you saw God begin to confirm that truth in your life.
Key Takeaways
True biblical faith is a matter of the heart, not the head. Knowing scripture intellectually is not the same as believing it in the deep place where God communes with us and where real faith is born.
The carnal mind is actually at war with the things of God. Our own reasoning and conclusions, no matter how logical they seem, can lead us far from the truth of God's Word if we do not submit our thinking to the Holy Spirit.
Faith has the ability to grow and increase. Romans 10:17 (NKJV) reminds us that 'faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God,' and God wants to breathe on His promises until they become living realities in our hearts.
What we believe in our hearts directs the course of our lives. Like a rudder on a ship, our deep convictions steer everything, which is why Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) commands us to guard our hearts above all else.
God is calling His church to get ready for an unprecedented move of His Spirit. The preparation begins with moving His promises from our heads into our hearts so that we can walk in genuine, immovable, Spirit-breathed faith.
Ending Prayer
Lord, we thank You for the truth of Your Word and for the way You have spoken to us today. We confess that too often we have settled for head knowledge when You have always wanted to give us something so much deeper. We ask You, Holy Spirit, to take every promise we have discussed today and begin to plant it deep into the soil of our hearts. Where there is unbelief, uproot it. Where there is doubt, replace it with a faith that cannot be shaken. We declare together that we are not going to be unbelieving but believing, just as Jesus called His disciples to be. We thank You that all things are possible to those who believe, and we choose to believe You today. Prepare us, Lord, for the revival You are sending. Make us a people whose hearts are so saturated with Your truth that signs, wonders, and miracles flow naturally from a life of genuine faith. We love You, Lord. We trust You. And we go from this place ready to believe You for more. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
