We Must Trust: Living with Faith in Dark Times
In a world that seems increasingly chaotic and uncertain, we find ourselves caught between two seemingly contradictory realities. On one hand, we live in very dark times filled with challenges, destruction, rampant sin, and widespread unrest. On the other hand, we live in the best day ever - a time when Jesus is alive and working in extraordinary ways, when revival is breaking out across the earth, and when we're witnessing more salvations than ever before.
The Unchanging Nature of God
The foundation of our faith rests on one unchanging truth: God never changes. "'I am the Lord, I change not'" - Numbers 23:19. This means the same love He had for Abraham, He has for you. The same miracles He performed throughout the Bible, He will do for you today. His character remains constant - He is faithful, good, and trustworthy in every season.
What Does It Mean to Trust God Completely?
Trust With Your Whole Heart
"'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not in your own understanding'" - Proverbs 3:5. The Hebrew word for trust here means to lie down or put your entire weight onto something - it's about complete rest and security. God isn't asking for partial trust; He wants your whole heart, entirely without exception.
You can measure how much you're truly trusting God by examining where you turn first in difficult situations. Do you immediately run to others for help, or do you turn to the Father who knows all things and already has the answer?
Don't Lean on Your Own Understanding
Your own understanding won't support you when life gets challenging. Your reasoning, apart from God's divine influence, will always war against the One who is worthy of your trust. This is why we must make our "yes" to God before we even enter difficult circumstances.
Biblical Examples of Radical Trust
Mary's Response to the Impossible
When the angel told Mary she would conceive Jesus, her understanding couldn't comprehend how this was possible. Yet her response in Luke 1:38 shows us the heart of trust: "'Behold the bondservant of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.'" She didn't focus on what she couldn't understand - she simply said yes to God's word.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the Fire
Facing death in the fiery furnace, these three men demonstrated unwavering trust. They declared that God was able to save them, but even if He didn't, they would still refuse to bow to idols. Their trust wasn't based on the outcome they wanted, but on who God is. And Jesus met them in the fire, protecting them in the very place that killed their captors.
King Asa Against Impossible Odds
When King Asa faced an Ethiopian army of one million men with only 580 soldiers, he didn't rely on military strategy. Instead, he called out to God: "'Lord, there is no one besides you to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength... we trust in you'" - 2 Chronicles 14:11. God completely routed the enemy army.
Abraham's Servant and God's Perfect Timing
Abraham's servant trusted God to lead him to the right wife for Isaac, even asking for a specific sign involving watering camels - no small task since one thirsty camel drinks 20-30 gallons! God orchestrated every detail perfectly, even causing Rebecca's family to bless her with the same blessing God had given Abraham.
Why Must We Trust Now More Than Ever?
God Delights in the Details
"'The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives'" - Psalm 37:23. God isn't just concerned with the big picture of your life - He cares about every single detail. He's already prepared solutions for problems you haven't even encountered yet.
We Become Like What We Trust
We always become like the one we trust. The things we place our trust in shape our character, values, and behavior. When we keep our eyes fixed on God and trust Him completely, we begin to reflect His nature and character.
Trust Releases the Weight of Struggle
Walking in trust is absolutely freeing. When we trust God completely, we transfer the weight of our struggles onto His shoulders. We can rest knowing that no matter what happens, God is working all things together for our good.
Life Application
This week, practice complete trust by making your "yes" to God before difficulties arise. When challenges come - and they will - resist the urge to immediately turn to your own understanding or run to others first. Instead, turn to your Father who already knows the beginning from the end and has prepared a way through every situation.
Ask yourself these questions:
Where do I turn first when problems arise - to God or to my own understanding?
Am I trusting God with my whole heart, or am I holding back certain areas of my life?
How can I demonstrate the same radical trust shown by Mary, the three Hebrew boys, King Asa, and Abraham's servant?
What specific situation in my life right now requires me to trust God completely rather than lean on my own understanding?
Remember, God has never failed to keep a promise, and He's not about to start with you. Trust Him with all your heart - He's already working on your behalf.
