2019 Prayer and Fasting Book

January 7-January 26

So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer.   Ezra 8:23

Introduction:

This booklet is set up in three sections; one section for each week.  The first week we will spend our time praying for our government.  The second week we will intercede for those who need divine healing.  And the last week we will contend for salvations.  Thanks for participating in our 2019 Prayer and Fasting.  Anticipate God to move in a powerful way because you take this special time.  Your prayers make such a difference.  Pray BIG!

Prayer & Fasting starts with you and your heart:

Dwight L Moody heard this from a British revivalist 100 years ago

“The world has yet to see what God will do with and for and through and in and by the man who is fully and wholly consecrated to Him.  It changed his ministry.

We must start our fast with our prayers centered on our own hearts.  Wholly consecrated to God must be our goal. What might God do if we commit our lives fully to him?  How do you do that?  Below are two people who found great success by drawing a circle.

Gypsy Smith was a 19th century revivalist.  Whenever he came to a new town…he’s stop on the outskirts and draw a circle in the dirt. Then he would stand inside the circle and pray, “ O God, please send a revival to this town, and let it begin inside this circle.

Anne Graham Lotz

Revival begins when you draw a circle around yourself and make sure everything in that circle is right with God.

Pray over yourself:

While standing in that circle asking God to let revival begin with YOU…pray these scriptures over yourself.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me Your way, O LORD;I will walk in Your truth;Unite my heart to fear Your name.

Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

Romans 6:13

And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Commit to memory verses throughout the year.

The Holy Spirit uses what we have stored in our hearts to speak to us.  This would be a great verse to commit to memory. Even if you start with just one it would be great.

2 Corinthians 2:15

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

The space below is for you to write things you specifically want to pray about for yourself: You should also write down things God speaks to you about.

How to Stand in the Gap:

(The thoughts & photos below are from author Karen Barber.)

What exactly is standing in the gap? Standing in the gap is a form of intercessory prayer where our prayers bridge the gap between God and people who are unable or unwilling to pray for themselves.

When we stand in the gap in prayer, we pray for God’s help, mercy, intervention and/or forgiveness on the behalf of individuals, groups of people or nations.

Examples of the kinds of situations where you might need to stand in the gap in prayer include:

–  Praying for those who don’t believe in God, or are angry at God or who are actively denouncing faith/religion.

–  Praying for the weak, ill, downtrodden or oppressed who cannot pray for themselves.

–  Praying for those in a crisis situation who don’t know God and/or who may not know how to pray or who don’t believe in prayer.

–  Praying for those who are living in opposition to God through their unhealthy lifestyle, pride or rebellion.

–  Praying against evil and for the coming of God’s Kingdom.

—Praying for salvation of those who are blind to the truth of God’s Word.

–  Praying against cultural and social conditions that are corrupt, evil or destructive.

      –  Praying for those going through the stress of a major life crisis whose mental energy may be drained to the point where they are unable to pray for themselves.

Here are some ways to stand in the gap in prayer for others.

1.  Answer God’s call to intercede

We usually receive an inner calling to stand in the gap in prayer when:

–  God opens our eyes to a situation where prayer needs to be made to bring God’s help and intervention and…

–  Those who should be praying – the ones who could change their behavior, repent, serve justice etc. – can’t or won’t pray.

2.  Picture a broken wall

The term standing in the gap comes from the Bible verse in Ezekiel 22:30 that says, “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none.” (NIV)  In Bible times, cities had walls around them to help defend them from attack.  Broken parts of the wall created a physical gap in the city’s ability to protect itself from invading armies.  In this Bible verse, because there is a gap in the wall, God is looking for someone to step in and guard the broken, vulnerable territory.  Picture a well-armed warrior standing fearlessly in the breach, forcefully repelling any enemy soldiers who try to enter through the gap in the wall.  This is a visual picture of your role when you prayerfully stand in the gap through intercessory prayer.

3.  Ask God to help you identify why the wall is broken

In order to pray specifically first ask yourself, “What graces and spiritual strengths are missing from this situation?  What negative forces have created this gap?”

— Neglect, lack of action, lack of priority and a false sense of security.

–  Pride, ego, depending on things such as money, education, military power and not on God

–  Following false gods, such as fame, power, riches, prejudice, injustice

–  Occult practices, false religions

–  Unbelief, lack of faith, neglect of personal faith, misusing religion for your own purposes

–  Oppressing others, anger, resentment, being unforgiving

–  Victimization by others, oppression, personal calamity, illness

–  Lack of access to help, education, opportunity

–  Addictions, lust, moral failure, sinful habits

Identifying the “gap” that exists will help you to pray very specifically against it.

4.  Pray with authority

Once God has helped you identify the gap or the underlying spiritual need, puts you in a position to pray with authority.  One of the primary ways to do this is to choose Bible verses that speak to the specific issues.  Pray and claim these scriptures as part of your prayer.

Scriptures about the redemptive power of Christ are especially useful in all situations when standing in the gap in prayer.  Here are some verses about Christ’s power to bridge the ultimate gap between humanity and God our Father.  John 3:16; Matt. 26:28; Eph. 1:7-10;  2:13; Col. 1:13,14.

5.  Be vigilant and persistent

Standing in the gap in prayer is often something you do more than a single time.  Usually, intercessors continue to pray at regular intervals figuratively standing in prayer in the same spiritual gap.

7.  Praise God for His mercy and compassion

When we stand in the gap praying for others, we are praying God’s heart for the world.  Isaiah 63:9 says,  “In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them.  In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.”   (NIV)  Even though the situations for which we are praying may seem like lost causes, Christ assures us that he came to seek and find the lost in the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:1-7.  Before circumstances change, we can offer praise and thanksgiving to God for calling us to intercede and for his ability to restore the lost.

Week 1

Monday January 7 through Sunday January 13th

So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30

Week 1   Contending for our Government

I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer.  As we rise to each new day, and again hen each day is spent, let words of prayer be o our lips.  Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Bible commands us to pray for our leaders.

I Timothy 2:1-2 NLT

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.

The Bible promises things change when we pray with humility for our nation.

2 Chronicles 7:14

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

Scriptures you could pray over our leaders.

Proverbs 2:2-9  Pray these thoughts over our leaders.

Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. 3Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. 4Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. 5Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. 6For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the justand protects those who are faithful to him. 9Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.

Ephesians 1:17

“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him.

John 8:32

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Week 2

Monday, January 14 through Sunday, January 20th

So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30

Week 2  Contending for Healing

Thought:

There is an overwhelming need for people to experience healing. Though the need is great……the promises are greater.  Will you contend…stand in the gap…..on behalf of those who need physical healing? Your prayers could change someone’s destiny.

Pray with authority:  Luke 10:19a  Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy

Instructions:

Make of list of people you know who need healing. Pray scripture over them. Pray with faith…believing that your prayers will change their situations.  Our God is the Great Physician.  He understands the intricacies of the human body.  Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in praying…then pray what comes to your heart from Him. Try praying in the Spirit and then ask for the understanding. (i Corinthians 14:15)…Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit,*[ Or in the Spirit; also in 14:15b,16.] and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.

Healing Scriptures to pray.

Isaiah 53:5

But He was wounded for our transgressions,He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

Psalm 107:20

He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

James 5:16

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

I Peter 2:24

…who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

Week 3

Monday, January 21 through Saturday, January 26th

So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Ezekiel 22:30

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness,The power and the glory,The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours;Yours is the kingdom, O LORD,And You are exalted as head over all. I Chronicles 29:11

Week 3  Contending for Salvations & Deliverance

Pray for the salvations of many:

There are literally thousands of people who do not know God.  Their minds have been blinded by the god of this world. (Satan)  The Lord is coming again and there are too many that do not know God.  Matthew tells us to pray to the Lord of the Harvest asking for both workers and for people to be saved.  It is our responsibility to pray for both.  Psalm 2 tells us to ask for the nations as our inheritance.  Have you been asking?

Matthew 9:35-38

35Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary*[NU-Text and M-Text read harassed.] and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38“Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Psalm 2:8

Ask of Me, and I will give YouThe nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession.

Pray for those bound by drugs, alcohol, pornography, spirits & , etc.

The Son of God came to set people free.  Some are so bound that they don’t even understand that God can set them free.  That is where your prayers can change a person’s destiny.  Are you willing to contend….stand in the gap….pray for those trapped by the enemy?

Psalm 107:20

He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

Luke 1:74

To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

Pray with the authority you possess as a believer:

Luke 10:19

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Promises about salvation… to pray over individuals.

Acts 16:31

So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Acts 2:21

And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Luke 19:10

“for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Make a list:  Pray specific:  Pray with authority:  Pray believing:

Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20“teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
